Illawong is a neighbourhood in the suburb of Menai located in the Sutherland Shire, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The name is an Aboriginal word meaning "Land Between Two Rivers". These two rivers are the Georges River and the Woronora River. Illawong also features a cricket oval. Illawong was inhabited centuries ago by the Tharawal and/or Eora tribes who left remnants of their lives in many middens, rock carvings and cave paintings. A Short history of Illawong Captain Hunter was the first white man to explore this area. In 1789 he sailed up the Georges and Woronora Rivers. In 1795-6, with Matthew Flinders and George Bass, Captain Hunter explored further up the Georges River and named the area of Bankstown. The construction of Old Illawarra Road took from 1843 to 1845 and was personally inspected by Major Thomas Mitchell, It being one of the last public works done by convicts. The construction of Old Illawarra Road meant that the new route would be 20 miles shorter to the South Coast. At the Southern end of the district Major Mitchell took the road across the ford at the head of the Woronora River. He named the Ford "Pass of Sabugal" which was probably due to the resemblance in the scenery of the Northern-Eastern frontier of Portugal. In the 1890's Menai was a farming area and Illawong, then known as East Menai, was an area where the wealthy people of Sydney built holiday homes and weekenders.
